The Itaipu Dam is a dam on the Paraná River, on the border between Paraguay and Brazil, and is not a joint project.
It took the name “Itaipu” from the name of an island near the place. Itaipu, in fact, derives from the Guarani language and means singing stone. It is the largest functioning hydroelectric power plant in the world for the annual production of energy.
The artificial lake has 29 billion m³ of water, with an extension of 200 km in a straight line and an approximate surface of 1400 km². The dam is 7,700 meters long and 196 meters high.
