In order to take advantage of the best lighting conditions, leave early in the morning to see the “Blue Lake Cave” (Gruta do Lago Azul), discovered by the Indians in 1924. This cave is one of the few in the region that has an infrastructure for visitors. There are a total of 500 caves in the area.
Located 21km from the center of Bonito, the Grotta del Lago Azul provides a tour that passes inside a cave which is one of the largest flooded cavities on the planet.
The tour begins with a 200m walk to the cave entrance where the road is made of stones. On descending into the Grotta del Lago Azul there is a flight of about 300 steps which is equivalent to 150m in height to the lake with blue waters. During the descent, the guide will make a few stops for visitors to rest and take photos.
During the tour it is possible to contemplate the stalagmites, geological formations, the stalactites of various shapes and sizes of billions of years.
At the end of the descent, the visitor remains about 10 minutes to contemplate the turquoise blue waters. On the way back, the same path is followed.
There are bathrooms, bars and a small relaxation area on site.
Curiosity
In underwater explorations of the Grotta del Lago Azul, countless fossils of extinct animals were discovered, such as the Giant Preguiça, the Tooth-de-Saber Tiger, Gargantuan and other species.
Thus part of the evolution of our history is studied by some paleontologists who are still looking for answers in the Cave of the Azul Lake.
There is also a parallel project that studies a prehistoric crustacean that lives in the waters of the Grotta del Lago Azul, as ancient as the dinosaurs. It is a freshwater shrimp called Potiicoara Brasiliensis and cataloged in 2002.
